About Max

My Story & Why I started the Untide Sailing Club

I stepped on my first boat at age 4 from my stepdad - But when I tried to start on my own, I realized something nobody tells you:

There’s was no roadmap. No clear starting point. Just conflicting opinions, confusing information, and expensive mistakes waiting to happen.

So I had to figure everything out the hard way. Today, after 40,000+ nautical miles, halfway around the world on a classic Swan 37, living full-time on my boat, and earning my Commercial Yachtmaster, one thing is clear:

It didn’t need to be this hard.

If someone had shown me a simple & structured path, it would’ve saved me years and a lot of money.

That’s why I created the Untide Sailing Club

Here is a detailed breakdown of all modules of the video course:

Module 1 - The Foundation (The "Why")
We start by stripping away the fantasy and building a realistic plan. We’ll define your specific goal (Owner vs. Crew), set a realistic timeline, and shatter the myths about "who" gets to be a sailor.
Module 2 - The Reality Check (Budget & Feasibility)
The ocean doesn't care about your bank balance, but you do. I’ll show you the real numbers of this life - not the glossy Instagram version. We will build a budget that fits your life, whether you have $50, $5,000 or $500,000. You’ll learn how to trade "sweat equity" for money and realize that you are closer to affording this than you think.
Module 3 - The Path of the Owner (Buying the Asset)

Buying a boat is a huge risk and commitment. Don't do it blind. I will teach you how to:

- Find "hidden gem" bluewater boats that aren't on the big brokerage sites.

- Analyze hull shapes (Keels, Rigs, Rudders) to distinguish a safe offshore vessel from a coastal toy.

- Read a survey like an engineer to spot the true "deal-breakers" versus the "negotiating points."
Module 4 - The Path of the Crew (Sailing for Free)
You don’t need to own a boat to see the world. I’ll show you how to find legitimate, safe captains who are looking for crew. You’ll learn how to position yourself as "Attractive Crew" - someone who is an asset on deck, not a passenger—and how to vet a boat for safety before you step aboard.

- For Crew Members: learn how to position yourself, find captains, message effectively, become an “Attractive Crew,” stay safe, and get your first spot on board.

- How to become a professional crew member, and ultimately get paid to go sailing
Module 5 - The "Untide" Engineering System
This is the core of your safety. When you are 1,000 miles from land, you are the mechanic. Drawing on my AEC qualifications and 40,000 miles of breakage, I will teach you the essentials of:

- Propulsion: Diesel engine basics, fuel systems, and troubleshooting.
- Electrical: Solar, batteries, and power management.
- Plumbing: Seacocks, pumps, and heads.
- Rigging: The fundamentals of a safe and seaworthy sailing vessel.

4. The 'Showstopper' Inspection Checklist - Don't rely solely on a surveyor. This is the exact engineering checklist I use to vet a boat before making an offer, designed to spot the expensive deal-breakers most buyers miss.

5. The Pre-Passage Protocol - The non-negotiable safety checks I perform on Elixir before every single ocean crossing. Print this out, laminate it, and use it every time you leave the dock.

I stepped aboard Elixir for the first time in 2022. It was my very first experience with ocean sailing; I had absolutely no skills and was, understandably, a little nervous. We made incredible memories – sailing to remote islands, coast hopping between surf towns and visiting indigenous communities along the Pacific coasts of Panama and Costa Rica. Since then, I’ve been developing my skills through racing (even competing in Fastnet 2025), made incredible sailing friends and become part of a community that I cherish – and I can trace it all back to that first sail with Max. I am now in the process of searching for my own boat to start my own circumnavigation. Thank you Max for helping me to find my purpose and for providing the inspiration and proof that sailing the world is a possible dream.

To be fair it's a monthly subscription, so everyone can stay as long as they need and want and don't have to pay the same amount.
